Metallurgical Coal Technical Specialist

Responsible for providing specialist technical input to the Met Coal operations, P101 and processes optimization projects, and to support the BCO functional team

Typical Tasks:

Delivers safety leadership and demonstrates Anglo American values, with a focus on the safe design and operation of the Met Coal CHPP’s

Provides technical input and support to operations and projects for process trouble shooting and the resolution of metallurgical problems in the Met Coal CHPP’s

Leads investigations and coordinates the implementation of initiatives in collaboration with Operations and the Manager Coal Processing for the optimization of CHPP processes and delivery of sustainable step changes in performance

Conducts operational performance analysis, systematic process characterization test work, and develops and maintains process models as required

Supports the application of geometallurgy (coal washability studies etc.) to understand and optimize CHPP performance

Provides input to and validates the final selection of Budget and LOM Terms of Reference and the use of geometallurgical throughput models

Provides technical input to Business Improvement process control capability to assist with advanced process control implementation in the Met Coal CHPP’s

Provides oversight and assurance on Group governance policies, procedures and standards

Promotes knowledge sharing and transfer of best practice in CHPP processing and participates within appropriate communities of practice

Formal qualifications:

A minimum undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours degree or equivalent) in Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering

Desirable: A postgraduate qualification (Masters / Doctoral degree or equivalent) in a relevant technical discipline

Role-specific knowledge:

Experience in operating and providing technical support to CHPP plants at a senior level

Familiar with process analysis and process modelling software, including statistical data analysis, mass balancing and process modelling

Familiar with plant sampling requirements and M2M strategies


Provides consistent outstanding behaviour in relation to safety practices with a deep understanding of the importance of safety

Other requirements to perform work effectively:

Ability to work and communicate within a global team

International travel (limited) and local travel (regular) will be required
