Lead Structural Underground Mining Engineer

Our Brisbane office is experiencing further growth due to recently secured, high profile Projects. We are currently seeking a Lead Structural Underground Mining Engineer with extensive underground and surface mining experience to join the Project Delivery Group.

The ideal candidate will not only bring their technical expertise in the Mining sector, they will relate well to and motivate others. We are looking for a leader who will support and bring out the best in their team – ensuring the focus remains on safety, quality, cost and schedule in the planning and execution of the Project work.

Some of the key responsibilities of this role will include:

Work to ensure the implementation of safety and integrity principles in Hatch structural documentation

Participate in preparation of fee estimates and bids

Supervision of structural design teams and sub-consultants

Co-ordinate performance of the work with plant operations and maintenance personnel and structural project work carried out

Ensuring compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures for all design activities

Accept authority to sign off IFC drawings on supervisor agreed scope

Solicit pricing from contractors and suppliers.

Maintaining technical knowledge to ensure appropriate technologies are incorporated into designs and most cost-effective design techniques are utilized

Maintain structural engineering work procedures, specifications, and computer aided design programs

Actively participate in marketing to customers and ensure project work exceeds the customer’s expectations

The successful candidate will possess the following skills, experience and attributes:


Extensive structural design experience in the underground mining environment industry including Steel and Concrete head-frames, shaft steelwork and understand the dynamics of these designs as well as underground structures in particular, ore pass chutes, high pressure Pipe column supports in deep level shafts amongst other structures as typically found in an underground mining environment.

Working knowledge of AS/NZS 3785 - Underground Mining Set

Degree qualification and professional registration in Civil / Structural Engineering

Experience on Structural Design programs such as SpaceGass or similar

Design experience with modulised construction

High-level analytical skills using FEA software

Sound knowledge the mining / minerals processing industry and design codes

Well-developed communication, team and interpersonal skills


Experience with Strand FEA software
