The Opportunity

The Metallurgist Production A&I role is responsible for optimising metallurgical operation of Furnaces and Sinter Plant units for production of ferro alloys and sinter with the aim of maximising productivity and efficiency, reducing costs and ensuring that product quality conforms with customer requirements.

Ensures process safety is achieved through compliance with all safety related procedures

Ensure continuous effective management of critical controls are in place for identified material risks under Analysis & Improvement responsibility.

Report against the Production plan and elevate non-compliance to the Production Superintendent and Production Manager.

Monitor production units while in operation, working collaboratively with Production Execution teams to identify production issues and fault find.

Actively contribute to the daily and weekly production planning cycles, communicating and reporting on past 24-hour production activities and recipe changes.

Investigate reported events and deviations from target to identify root causes.

Provide input into business plans, budgeting and forecasting processes

Control raw material type, quality and quantity as sinter plant / furnace feed and ensure changes are made based on value in use.

Control sintering / smelting process by setting metallurgical parameters and giving directives to the plant operators.

Determines appropriate course of action for correcting adverse process trends and preventing non-conforming product.

Provides technical input to other areas of the plant such as raw material handling, furnace operation, sinter plant operation, maintenance, casting machines, baghouse and scrubber operations and product crushing screening and handling.

Liaise with Production Shift Supervisors regarding unit performance of tapping, casting and crushing requirements.

Provide input for engineering modifications needed for plant and equipment operated by the Production function.

Liaise with the Maintenance, and Production Material Movements functions to enable cross-functional alignment and support the delivery of Production improvements.

Undertake QA activities in the relevant production area.

Training and coaching for production operators.

About you

Technical

5-7 years post graduate Metallurgist experience in a smelting operation

Ferro Alloy smelting experience in Operational pyrometallurgy / submerged arc furnace is preferable

Bachelor of Metallurgical Engineering or Science in relevant related discipline (mandatory)

Extensive understanding in extractive metallurgy with a focus on smelting operations

Strong investigative and analytical skills

Experience with raw materials and equipment budgeting, forecasting and reporting

Demonstrated ability to facilitate and communicate change with relevant stakeholders.

Superior planning skills from task/project inception through to full life cycle

Understanding of process control systems

Strong organisation skills with an eye for detail and analysis

Highly capable computer skills, and the ability to troubleshoot and solve complex problems.

Leadership and Business Acumen

Proven ability of working in a large team of technical professionals.

Relating technical solutions to financial decisions.

Ability to relate with technical and operational people.

Interpersonal and communication skills, able to relate, influence and persuade at all levels of the organisation.
