Virus Forces Newcrest To Axe FIFO Route

Newcrest Mining has become the first Australian miner to axe a fly in, fly out (FIFO) worker route because of the coronavirus, highlighting the staffing challenge the pandemic poses to several of Australia's biggest and best performing export industries.

The nation's biggest gold miner confirmed it would stop flying Australian FIFO workers into Papua New Guinea's Lihir Island, where Newcrest extracts gold from the caldera of an extinct volcano.

Like most mining and energy companies that use FIFO workers, Newcrest already had precautions in place such as temperature checks on those preparing to fly, but said it would go a step further and cut the route entirely within days.
