Yunupingu Flags Native Title Mining Claim

Prominent Aboriginal leader Galarrwuy Yunupingu has revealed plans for native title claim due this year against the Commonwealth for royalties received from bauxite mining on remote Arnhem Land.

The government did not consult traditional owners before granting a mining lease to Swiss miner Nabalco in the 1960s and the large bauxite mine's current owner is Rio Tinto.

The action to sue the Commonwealth Government for compensation for mining on the Gove Peninsula comes more than 50 years after his father unsuccessfully launched similar legal action.
