Worsley Shelves Expansion Plan But Wants More Clearing

South32 has shelved an expansion of its Worsley alumina refinery near Collie and sought permission to clear an additional 7100ha of native vegetation to mine bauxite.

The Perth-based miner this week submitted a revised expansion proposal to the Environmental Protection Authority.

A South32 spokeswoman said Worsley was focused on increasing alumina production to the refinery’s nameplate capacity of 4.6 million tonnes a year after $US3.2 billion ($4.55 billion) of work completed in 2012.
