FIFO Tax Scourge

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder chief executive John Walker believes tax concessions encouraging fly-in, fly-out work are a scourge to the Goldfields that could “kill” regional communities.

Mr Walker was one of 25 people at a Productivity Commission Remote Area Tax Concessions and Payments Forum in Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Tuesday.

The forum, which invited feedback and submissions from members of the public, drew a general consensus that FIFO-driven incentives such as the fringe benefit tax needed to be overhauled.

Mr Walker said there had been less commitment from large mining companies to Kalgoorlie-Boulder in recent times and it was hurting the community.
