Safety Watchdog Puts Underground Miners On Notice After Fatal Goldfields Accident

Western Australia's workplace safety regulator has put the underground mining industry on notice with the release of preliminary findings into an incident that claimed the life of a young father on July 13.

Father-of-two Michael Johnson was killed at Saracen Mineral Holding’s Dervish underground gold mine, north-east of Kalgoorlie, when the loader he was driving fell 25 metres over the edge of an open void in the mine known as a stope.

Stopes are open spaces left behind after ore is removed in underground mining operations.
